New Year gifts for employees arrive at an awkward moment. Your team received a Diwali gift only a few weeks earlier, the budget is nearly spent, and half the office is planning leave. Done well, though, a New Year gift lands in a quiet week with nothing competing for attention, and it's the first thing people reach for when they come back in January.
The trick is to give something that belongs to the start of a year.

Don't repeat Diwali
If Diwali was a dry fruit hamper, the New Year shouldn't be another one. The two gifts are close enough together that people compare them, and a repeat reads as an afterthought. Switch the category instead. If Diwali went to the home, the New Year can go to the desk, and the other way round. It's the easiest mistake in corporate gifting to avoid.
Or make it smaller and more personal.
A New Year gift doesn't need to match the Diwali budget. Nobody expects it to. One good piece in the ₹500 to ₹1,200 band, with a handwritten card from the team lead, often gets a warmer response than a bigger box did in November.
New Year gifts for employees that get used
Something to start the year with
A diary and pen set is the most natural New Year gift there is, and a good leatherette one gets carried all year. Engrave the employee's name on the pen and it stops being stationery and becomes theirs, which is exactly the feeling a gift at the turn of the year is supposed to leave behind. Names cost little.
Winter warmers
In north India, January is cold. A temperature bottle that keeps tea hot through a long commute gets used every day until March. Nobody leaves a flask behind in January. A compact room heater goes further still: it's a gift the whole household appreciates, and it works as well for a plant team on the outskirts of the city as for an office.
A nudge for the resolution
Plenty of people start January promising to exercise more. A Welspun gym towel with a bottle for the gym bag meets them halfway, and it's one of the few gifts that fits the date exactly. It also avoids the problem with most wellness gifts, which is that they tell the recipient something about themselves they didn't ask to hear.

For remote and hybrid staff
Send it home. Hybrid teams are the ones most often forgotten in December, simply because they aren't in the office on the day the boxes are handed out. What to budget per head
The same four bands apply as the rest of the year, with the branding included in each.
- ₹150 to ₹450: a metal pen, a notebook or a mug, for very large teams
- ₹500 to ₹1,200: temperature bottles, diary and pen sets, laptop sleeves; a comfortable band for a whole company
- ₹1,500 to ₹3,500: earbuds, speakers and backpacks for senior staff
- ₹4,000 and above: smartwatches and headphones, usually kept for leadership or long service
When to order New Year corporate gifts
Earlier than you'd think, because of Diwali. Production slots and the better stock both tighten through October and early November, and a December brief competes with the tail of the festive rush.
Work backwards from the day your office closes for the holidays. Allow a few days for a sample and your approval, then 7 to 14 working days of production, then delivery. For most companies that means briefing us in the second half of November, and no later than the first week of December.
Late December deliveries are a gamble. Many offices are half empty from Christmas onwards.
